Around 60% of Tanzania’s population work in agriculture, most of them as smallholder farmers. Yet many fields do not produce enough.

Soils are depleted, the weather is increasingly unpredictable, and knowledge of efficient cultivation methods is limited. Agronomic advice is rarely available. Many farmers therefore rely on chemical fertilizers or low-quality seeds – often at high cost and with little success. Markets are also difficult to access, so even good harvests are rarely rewarded fairly.

The result: low productivity, unstable incomes, and a farming system struggling to withstand climate change.
