The Challenge

Hard work – little yield

Around 60 % of Tanzania’s population work in agriculture, most of them as smallholder farmers. Yet many fields do not produce enough. Soils are depleted, the weather is increasingly unpredictable, and knowledge of efficient cultivation methods is limited. Agronomic advice is rarely available. Many farmers therefore rely on chemical fertilizers or low-quality seeds – often at high cost and with little success. Markets are also difficult to access, so even good harvests are rarely rewarded fairly. The result: low productivity, unstable incomes, and a farming system struggling to withstand climate change.

The Innovation

Digital tools for the field

MazaoHub combines digital technology with personal support. AI-driven soil analyses and precise crop plans help farmers use seeds, fertilizers, and water efficiently. Smart cultivation calendars and early warning systems provide timely information about weather and climate risks. These tools are implemented through Farmer Excellence Centers and a network of more than one hundred trained field officers. Through the digital platform CropSupply.com, farmers gain direct access to markets – without middlemen. This “Tech & Touch” model makes precision agriculture accessible even to small-scale farmers.

The Standout

Better harvests, less chemicals, stronger soils

More than 54,000 farmers across Tanzania already benefit from MazaoHub, including around 22,000 women. On average, they increase their yields by 150 % per hectare, reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers by 30 %, and apply five times more organic manure. This not only improves productivity but also strengthens soil health and climate resilience. The combination of technology, local advisory services, and direct market access enables smallholder farmers to succeed even under challenging conditions.

Venture

Meet the Founders

Geophrey Tenganamba

Founder & CEO

Geophrey Tenganamba grew up on a small family farm in Tanzania. He knows what it means when fields yield little, advice is missing, and farmers are seen as “hopeless poor.” As a child, there was a government advisor in his village – but he never saw her on their fields. This isolation still shapes many smallholder farmers today. With MazaoHub, Geophrey wants to change that: AI-powered soil testing, tailored crop plans, and on-site advice give farmers the knowledge and appreciation his own family lacked.

Josephat Adelard Urassa

Co-Founder & CTO

Josephat Urassa also grew up with agriculture. His parents' farm fed the family, but left no room for anything else. Later, he studied computer science and worked as a software developer for many years. With MazaoHub, he brings both of his roots and his technical knowledge together. As CTO, he develops digital tools that really help farmers—from soil scanners to digital harvest planners. His goal is simple: technology should speak in a way that everyone can understand and use.
